West African Black Rhinoceros Poaching: A Persistent Threat to Conservation

The West African black rhinoceros has been facing an existential crisis due to poaching and habitat loss for decades. The species, once abundant in the region, is now critically endangered, with its numbers dwindling rapidly. In Kenya, for instance, the black rhino population plummeted from over 20,000 to just 350 between 1970 and 1989, primarily due to illegal poaching and habitat loss.

The ELC (Environmental Law Centre) has also been actively involved in addressing wildlife crime, having assessed over 800 cases of illegal wildlife trade and made them available on WILDLEX.

The legal framework is a crucial component in combating wildlife crime. Strengthening legal systems to address poaching and illegal wildlife trade requires access to improved resources and tools for policymakers, judges, and civil society at local, national, and international levels. Publicly available laws, cases, and materials can serve as a mechanism for transparency, an important tool for legal actors, and a source of vital information to improve legal frameworks and their implementation.

The judiciary plays a critical role in the fight against wildlife crime. Access to legal information is a key component of good governance and the Rule of Law. In this context, the power of the law can be harnessed to bring perpetrators to justice and protect endangered species like the West African black rhinoceros.
